What is a Riding Pony?

Description

General Character – That of a miniature thoroughbred of quality and elegance, with some pony character.  Pony to have a fine coat along with fine mare and tail.

Colour – Straight colour

Height – Not to exceed 148cm at maturity

Head – A refined head, jaw and cheek bones.  A broad head tapering to a fine muzzle.  Slight dishing acceptable.  Free from coarseness under the throat.  Bold eyes, dark in colour.  Ears should be small (not large or thick), well shaped and well placed (neither too close nor twisted to the side).  Wall eye objectionable.  Head should be set on to the neck with a natural flex at the poll.

Shoulders – Sloping (preferably 45degrees) meeting a definite wither.  Coarse and heavy shoulders are objectionable.

Forelegs – Correctness of conformation essential.  Legs to be straight.  Neither base wide, nor base narrow.  Neither over , nor back, nor offset at the knees.  Pasterns to be neither too upright nor too lengthy.  Calf knees objectionable.  Bone to be hard, flat and well defined with clean joints.  Feet to be well shaped, neither too flat nor too upright.  Pinched heels/boxy feet objectionable.

Back and Loins – Short and well coupled with well-sprung ribs.  Heavy barrel undesirable. Slack loins; long, wide, sway and roach backs undesirable.

Hind Quarters / Hind Legs – Correctness of conformation essential.  Hocks to be well defined and correctly placed underneath the animal (neither too far forward, too far back, nor too straight in the hind leg).  Cow hocks and sickle hocks objectionable.  Hind quarter to be well shaped with a well set on tail.  Goose-rumped objectionable.

Movement – Originating from the hocks, straight from the shoulder and elegantly covering the ground.  High knee action most undesirable.
